The Little Coffee Company: “Macchiatos on the menu”

If they made a trilogy of coffee movies, the prequel would be Espresso, the sequal would be Ristretto and the follow up, a decade later with only a few of the original actors still taking part, would be Macchiato.

To make an Espresso Macchiato, you take a shot of espresso and ‘mark’ it with a dash of milk, and then add a little island of foam on top. The foam island was originally required in order to make the Macchiato easily distinguishable when placed on the bar next to a straight up Espresso. Since we all shout at each other when we serve drinks these days, the island is no longer necessary, but it certainly looks cute – so we’ve kept it.

A Latte Macchiato is milk ‘marked’ with coffee. You pour a glass of steamed milk and then add a dash of espresso, which will sit on top of the milk until stirred in. They look adorable, but they don’t have much of a kick. We would recommend a Latte instead – similar in principle but with a healthy dose of caffeine.

An Espresso Macchiato might not be on every menu in town, but be sure to ask us anyway, as it’s a safe bet that the baristas of Brighton will oblige.
