Morgan and West: A Grand Adventure
Time Travelling Magicians Mr Morgan and Mr West were born in 1865 and have been zipping back and forth across the space time continuum ever since they were old enough to work out how to make best use of a wormhole.
Here they give Brighton Comedy Festival lovers their own inimitable guide to the city.
Ah Brighthelmstone. Sorry. Ah Brighton. What a wonderful place, restorative, curative, sunny, funny, and really rather wonderful. Since we’ll be visiting soon we thought we’d share our thoughts on the best things to do in this fair town.
1. Travel. Obviously you have to get to Brighton somehow and we heartily recommend a return trip (one cannot permanently shirk one’s commitments at home) with the Temperance society (run by Mr Thomas Cook) for the princely sum of one shilling. Leaving you plenty of change for all the fun to come.
2. First stop should really be one of the two magnificent piers Brighton has to offer. Chain Pier is an excellent promenade and cross channel ferry (for those truly wishing to escape) although watch out for high winds. West Pier, of course, has a pavilion and is the centre of attraction for all of the afternoon dances one could wish for. I am sure both marvels of modern engineering will be around for many years to come, resistant to wind, rain, and indeed fire as they are.
3. Funny bone in need of a good tickle? Perhaps some political satire is for you. Stop by the seafront to sample one of the increasingly popular Punch and Judy show booths. Don’t forget to spare a penny or two for the Professor as his Bottleman comes around at the end of the show. If you have small children, do not be alarmed, some shows now are child friendly even going so far as to omit the Devil and Hangman…
4. Why not wet your ankles in the bracing English Channel? Bathing machines are a common sight on the beach and one’s modesty can be protected for a modest fee. For those unfamiliar with these contraptions remember to raise the flag only when you are safely back inside and ready to return, lest you find your machine trundling off without you and your bathing suit visible to all and sundry. The scandal.
5. Penny licks. Although the old fashioned reusable cups are now outlawed you should still partake of the delicacy that is iced cream. Delicious.
There you have it, after you’ve done all this why not pop along to our show, Morgan & West: A Grand Adventure, 4.15pm, Brighton Dome, Sunday 19th October 1892… no wait. 2014. Darn. This article may not be as relevant as we thought…
