The purchasing habits of humans can be a curious thing – and evidenced by last week’s crazed and aggressive Black Friday deal hunting, dangerous too! Although I found it highly amusing to see hundreds of somewhat idiotic people chasing 10% discounts in stores that generally sell their goods at a premium above and beyond the average price you’ll find for the same goods online, it did get to me thinking about what new games would make the best presents this coming Christmas.

November is nearly always the busiest month for game releases and this year was no exception, with literally hundreds of titles released across a wide range of platforms. From the parent wanting to make their kids happy come 25 December to the teenager desperate to look cool to his or her mates, sifting through the titles on offer can be a daunting task. Therefore, in in the interest of Christmas spirit and good will toward gamers – here are my top Christmas gift picks:

PlayStation 4: Your best bet if you want to pick up an exclusive title for Sony’s flagship generation leading platform is LittleBigPlanet 3. Sackboy’s paper crafted sweet and quirky world is appealing to all age groups and the option to have up to four people playing at once makes it a genuinely appealing Christmas party game option too. The only shame about the PS4 is that this game is the only truly decent first party title so far…

Xbox One: for those on the other side of the console gaming fence, you have a lot more choice when it comes to high quality home-grown products. The absolute best choice in my opinion is the excellent value Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Literally four great games in one, all remastered to the highest current graphical standards and with the added bonus of being able to jump into any level as you please. A real bargain.

Best of the Rest: Other notable mentions have to be Super Smash Bros. on the Wii U, a highly addictive and easy to pick up social brawler for those who own a Nintendo console of the handheld or home variety. And finally for those who game mainly on older consoles or PC, it has to be Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare – available on virtually every system and an excellent game.

So there you have it, a quick and easy guide to some great games, and you didn’t have to punch someone in a frenzied Friday scramble to get it …
