Stage: Home grown talent
There’s no need to travel far for excellent theatre this February …
Situated in the heart of Brighton, just a stone’s throw from the Pavilion, the Marlborough Pub & Theatre is known for hosting quirky, queer and quality events, is proud home to Pink Fringe and purveyor of queer culture all year round. The building has a rich past, peppered with LGBT history as well as dark and spooky tales, rumours of a secret passageway, and many noteworthy guests and performers.
This February, the Marlborough Theatre presents ‘Homebrewed’, new work from two exciting graduate companies from Chichester University and the University of Brighton, as part of an initiative to develop new talent and get more exciting performance made in our city.
First up is Kate Pierson Hurts, Sometimes performed by Cool Hunting. Armed with red bull, microphones and the carpet from your local pub, Kate Pierson Hurts, Sometimes is an exploration of nostalgia, growing up, looking back, the politics of fame and attention, regret and forgiveness. Cool Hunting is the collaborative work of Daniel Hills and Rachel St Clair. They create work about their relationship to pop culture and the absurdity of trends. You’ll often find them dancing, immersing themselves in subcultures or emulating their idols, and they’re interested in how we measure up against the ‘grandiose’ image of the pop scene.
Second up, Beetle and Bird present Moon Fruit. Moon Fruit is an anti-theatre performance that reflects nature and the physical body, a nostalgic tale of two people searching for companionship on this lonely planet. Beetle and Bird are a London based performance duo, founded in 2010 by Kitty Dalton and Milly Prett. They began collaborating in 2009 whilst studying Performance and Visual Art at the University of Brighton. Combining Milly’s writing with Kitty’s musical skills and the pair’s shared vision, they create richly visual and emotive pieces.
Tickets are available from the Marlborough Theatre’s website, in person behind the bar, or on the night (subject to availability). The box office opens at 6.30pm each night.
