CITY ON THE STREETS
Homelessness in Brighton and Hove is one of the city’s biggest challenges.

While official counts put the number of people sleeping rough at about 70, charities claim the number is far higher.

In a four part series being shown on Latest TV news this week, we meet those who are responsible for looking after services for homeless people – and see the challenges that they face every day.

SILICON BEACH
Brighton may be known as silicon beach, but it could soon have a rival to that title. That’s because Worthing has been given more than £200,000 to develop a new creative hub.

The aim is to house 21 new businesses – most of which will be new creative industries.

ROAD BUMP
Brighton and Hove City Council has spent millions of pounds improving Edward Street for those on buses, bikes and on foot. But there was one thing they haven’t done so well. That’s because one of the speed bumps at the junction of Blaker Street is slowing down cars too well. It’s so steep that cars are being damaged when they drive over it.

Council officials have now apologised and are now carrying out repairs. But locals we spoke to remain unimpressed …

SPINNING IN HEAVEN
Norman Cook – better known as DJ and music producer Fatboy Slim – collected the University of Brighton’s Alumnus Award 2015 for his major contribution to the music industry and his ongoing support of the university.

A student at what was then Brighton Polytechnic from 1982–1985, Norman achieved a BA in British Studies and has since become one of the country’s top DJs and producers.

The same day also saw BBC newsreader Nicholas Owen receive an honorary Doctor of Letters for charity.

And that’s not forgetting the more than 1,800 people that received their honours as part of the annual winter graduation.
Well done to all!
lancing-seafront
END TO EYESORE?
It has stood on the seafront for years just waiting for someone to bring it into use. But could there finally be an end in sight for the saga of the empty building on Lancing beach?

Alex Hole, owner of the building, has plans to create a gym and café on the site – and the plan is for it to be open in the next few months.

PROPERTY PREMIUM
Property prices in Brighton and Hove have reached a premium. So when some first time buyers saw a studio flat go on the market for £70,000, they thought they were getting a fair deal.

But there is a catch – in the fact that this property is a double decker bus.

As Latest TV’s Mhairi Beveridge discovered, very few people seemed as enthusiastic as the agents about the offer …
tea-club
SPOUTING UP
They only launched a few months ago. But it seems like everyone wants to go to a Deans tea club event. For just £1 a session, dozens of older people are attending the sessions where they can have a natter and enjoy a nice cup of tea.

With events now running in Rottingdean, Saltdean, Bevendean and Woodingdean, it’s fair to say that they are now spouting up all over the place …

FIFTY SHADES OF CASH
It was a “Fifty Shades of…” type of week last week with the release of the much-anticipated film. And while there was a lot of controversy surrounding the movie itself, local businesses, of a certain type, say they have never been busier. She Said in Brighton’s Lanes said the book was a revolution for the sex shop industry – with many people now seeming quite happy to wander into what was previously regarded a seedy trade.

GREEN DREAM
Last week we caught up with the youngsters at St Luke’s Primary School in Brighton. They have spent the last 18 months raising money to install solar panels on the roof of their building.

So far they have raised nearly £10,000 by putting on events such as toy sales, clothes swaps and a World Cup fun day.

There’s a still a little way to go yet – £13,000 is the ultimate target – but I think this green dream will be realised sooner rather than later.
