John Foxx And The Maths

Last year’s ‘Interplay’ found rejuvenated synth pioneer John Foxx crafting dense modernist pop with the select group of electronic artists who make up The Maths. This evening’s show drew heavily from that album, but a generous scattering of Foxx’s classic solo singles and early Ultravox! material made the thematic connections between past and present explicit. A loud, clear mix picked out the intricacies of the group’s multiple keyboards, with Benge’s electronic drums rippling through the collective body of the boisterous audience. Beneath the audio-visual waves, band and audience alike submitted themselves to the rich depths of circuit board pleasure.
