Brightona Arty: Alison Krog
It takes Two
There’s an irresistible otherworldliness to Lewes that we love. And a regular jaunt is recommended if only to pop into the delightfully quirky artspaces to be found there. If you’re looking for an excuse to visit, here’s an interesting proposition. An exhibition by two painters who first met 20 years ago when Ann Johnson joined a class at Eastbourne College of Art and Technology where Anne de Geus was the tutor. They have remained in contact ever since, working regularly together.
Showing at the Hop Gallery in the Star Brewery building, ‘Drawn to Paint’ is a fascinating insight into how the duo source and develop their work. They sometimes use similar objects as a starting point, occasionally painting from each other’s drawings. It demonstrates how individual interpretation produces distinctly different paintings and is particularly compelling for nature lovers as much of the inspiration derives from surrounding landscape and gardens. From 20th June until 5th July.
Meanwhile, at Farley Farm Gallery in Chiddingly, catch up with the latest (and very collectable work) of the irrepressible Mark Glassman. His recent paintings have been inspired by the local scenery in Bishopstone, Seaford and Newhaven, where the artist finds continual fascination from the contrasts between fields, sea, harbour, and brick and beach. The gallery is in the grounds of Farley Farm House – which is suffused with the spirit of its former surrealist occupants photographer Lee Miller and artist Roland Penrose. Another reason to get out and go. Sundays throughout June and July. www.artymagazines.com
