Let’s talk about eyebrows, tattooed eyebrows to be precise, and when having your eyebrows tattooed you really would want me to be precise – millimetre perfect please!

How long does a permanent makeup tattoo last?
The word tattoo in recent years has lost its permanence, with semi-permanent makeup sounding like one day you’ll wake up and it’s gone! Permanent makeup and semi-permanent makeup are the same thing, and permanent makeup is a tattoo, with molecules of pigment implanted into your skin. The colour fades out over the years, but some may remain visible forever.

So as it fades could I end up with orange tattooed eyebrows?
If you don’t return for an annual colour refresh or a colour correction if needed, then yes you could. Permanent makeup pigments should be formulated to fade well, but not all are, and the right colour still needs to be chosen for your skin. Think about foundation colours, and how some start one colour, but change as soon as you get hot. It’s just pigments reacting to your skin.

Brown tattoo pigment is made up of several different colours, black, red, yellow, green and white in various amounts. Each colour has its own fade factor and you often see faded tattooed eyebrows looking shades of orange or pink, and if black was used, that can look grey, green or blue.

The faded tattoo colour is like a skin stain, and very difficult to remove if you decide you no longer want tattooed eyebrows. Faded colour can be corrected, and at Beautiful Ink this is something I specialise in, however you are again committing to the existing shape, or having a consultation to see if the shape can be reworked.

I regret the shape/colour of my eyebrow tattoo, can you get rid of it?
The simple answer is yes, but as it’s on the face, many people aren’t prepared for how they’ll look during healing, or don’t finish the course because the colour isn’t coming out quickly enough for them. Laser cannot be used on permanent makeup, so other non-laser methods are needed. Next month I’ll chat about what happens during an eyebrow tattoo removal treatment.

The ladies in the photos have all been in touch wanting to remove or reduce their tattooed eyebrows. Whether they got the tattoo they asked for or not, they all have the problem of wanting removal. When researching eyebrow tattoo photos online, you usually find the freshly tattooed photo, with comments that the healed tattoo will be much softer. As you can see, that’s not always the case. You can only trust your chosen eyebrow tattooist, so make sure they are a specialist!
