Comedy: Style council

Diversity has always been a buzz word in comedy – and not just as quotas on panel shows. The great thing about going out for a laugh is that there are so many different styles in which the aforementioned laugh can be served up. This week’s picks are a prime example of just that.

Gary Delaney is a very clever joke-writer. Puns are his stock in trade, one-liners his bread and butter, and such is his talent with the form that he can machine-gun them out without a single joke lost in the crowd. Delaney is a classicist, with a modern talent.

Laura Lexx went viral earlier this year when she put a sexist punter in his place whilst MCing at Komedia and it was caught on camera. This is the hour-long show she took to Edinburgh this year that the critics loved, covering marriage, feminism and the folks that made Stonehenge. A bit of politics, some great stories, and plenty of funnies.

And the internationally-acclaimed whimsical, surreal, prop-assisted comedy of Jason Byrne is in town too.

Pick a comedic style to suit your mood and batter those autumn chills.

Gary Delaney: There’s Something About Gary, Wednesday 2 November, Komedia, 8pm, £14; Laura Lexx: Tyrannosaurus Lexx, Monday 7 November, Caroline Of Brunswick, 7.45pm, £5/3; Jason Byrne: Propped Up, Friday 4 November, The Old Market, 8pm, £17.50
