London Philharmonic Orchestra, Tasmin Little (violin), Osmo Vänskä (conductor)

Renowned as an expert Sibelius conductor, Vänskä’s evening begun with a delicate and shimmering performance of The Swan of Tuonela. Tasmin Little brought a taut, spiky energy to Walton’s Violin Concerto, while also illuminating the humanity in what can be seen as a somewhat knotty piece.

Sibelius’ Symphony No.6 sounds very high and light in many parts and the LPO’s string section sounded icy, evocative and restrained resulting in a staggeringly beautiful 27 minutes or so. The more popular Symphony No.7 was a majestic and soaring finale that the crowd loved and which sounded suitably vigorous and exciting. A stunning evening exemplifying the LPO’s strong programme choices and impeccable performance standards.
