Wave: sports massage at Revitalise

As Brighton Marathon is upon us, Revitalise offers Victoria Nangle a taste of massage

You don’t have to be an athlete to have ever suffered a sports injury. A sore shoulder, a bad back or a weak knee can all benefit from the rejuvenating pressure a massage brings about. As Brighton Marathon comes ever closer though(Sunday 10 April!), it’s well worth investing in a sports massage to both make sure you perform your best and to help prevent injury. It’s a specialised field, but if you’re going to look after yourself, it’s a holistic affair that’s ongoing. After all that training to compete in Brighton Marathon, it’s vital to ensure those highly developed muscles are looked after.

Sports massage techniques are used to manipulate the soft tissue to lengthen muscles and reduce tension and scar tissue. Deep tissue massage improves your posture and breaks down bad habits. Both clear the energy pathways within the body, release emotional tension and do that all important job of relieving pain and increasing vitality.

“I felt pampered and nurtured as I was massaged firmly, confidently and thoroughly”

Upon visiting Revitalise for a deep tissue and sports massage with Teresa, she sat me down and asked about my lifestyle and problem areas of my body that I might like to focus on during the massage. Being able to perform both deep tissue massage and sports massage (as well as previous extensive experience with pregnancy massage for those enquiring), meant that Teresa could create a massage tailored for me and my body’s needs. This holistic approach is key, as she encourages a general self care and distributes information to help, without preaching or overly directing. She was supportive as a friend, but with the expertise of a professional, and once assessed by Teresa she left me to get ready for the full body massage in a private room.
As well as tailoring the massage itself to the individual, Teresa also tailored the massage oils she used once I was ready, combining a mixture of essential oils. It’s all well and good being fit and healthy, but unless you continue to look after your body in a combination of ways including massage, you may only be nurturing one half of yourself and heading towards different problems later down the line.

I felt truly pampered and nurtured as I was massaged firmly, confidently and thoroughly. By the end of the hour-long session muscles that had long learned to hold on were letting go, and I could feel the benefit right from my toes to my scalp. What a great way to becoming a better person.
