Wayne McGregor Random Dance
Brilliant and complex lighting almost stole the show from a cast of incredible dancers at the Dome last night. But at the end of the day their breathtakingly physical performance won out. There was a stark, hard edge to the work that was disquieting, the choreography throwing their painfully lean torsos into ever more extreme shapes and gravity-defying postures. The work however, whilst visually stunning, aurally left me cold. The ubiquitous soundscape of synthesized noise, crashing and squeaking, dominated a score that had but a few musically interesting moments. Contemporary dance companies seem to favour this kind of modern music, but it does nothing for me and I confess to having zoned much of it out to concentrate on the superb choreography and dancing and the brilliant use of light.
