Man held after armed robbery in Brighton

An armed robber was thwarted this morning when an alarm went off during the hold up in Brighton.

The robber threatened the shop owner with a knife but fled empty-handed when the alarm sounded.

The shop owner suffered minor injuries in the hold up at Park Road Newsagents in Coldean at about 6.40am today. He did not need medical treatment.

Detective Constable Richard Mackenzie said: “Detectives are in the very early stages of investigating this serious offence.

“Support is being offered to the shop owner, who has understandably been left shocked by what has happened.

“Neighbourhood officers are assisting with the investigation by speaking to local residents and shop workers.

“Forensic examinations are under way.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact police immediately.”

A man is currently in custody on suspicion of conspiracy to commit robbery.
