Brighton to host one-stop shop for apprentices and employers
A one-stop skills shop where apprentices and apprenticeships can be matched is part of Brighton and Hove City Council’s plan to create 6,000 jobs by 2014.
The skills shop is one element in the City Employment and Skills Plan presented to Councillor Amy Kennedy, the council’s cabinet member for planning, employment, economy and regeneration, today (Thursday 3 November).
The plan sets out goals for employment in Brighton and Hove over the coming three years and is the result of detailed research into how the city is growing.
A steering group chaired by Phil Frier, principal of City College Brighton and Hove, developed the plan which Mr Frier formally presented to Councillor Kennedy at a cabinet member meeting.
Labour councillor Warren Morgan also attended the meeting at Hove Town Hall this afternoon and Councillor Carol Theobald spoke for the Conservatives.
Mr Frier told them that plans to establish a citywide approach to apprenticeships and internships were coming to fruition.
The skills shop will take over the old Brighton and Hove Albion premises in Queen’s Road – opposite the new club shop – and is expected to open in February 2012.
Councillor Kennedy said that the plan “aims to ensure that the city can offer the training and development opportunities needed to equip both unemployed and young residents to take advantage of new job opportunities created by our growing industries”.
