Investigations starts after Brighton man dies in fire
An investigation is under way after a Brighton man died in a fire at his home at the weekend.
Mark Rivers, 52, lived in a flat in Bristol Gardens, Kemp Town, less than half a mile from Roedean Fire Station.
A crew from Roedean and two from Preston Circus in Brighton tackled the fire from about 6am on Sunday (6 November).
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service also sent an aerial ladder platform to the scene.
The fire service is now working with Sussex Police to try to establish the cause of the blaze.
It is not thought to be suspicious.
The fire service said that staff had since visited neighbouring homes to deliver leaflets containing information about fire safety and urging people to fit a working smoke alarm.
Borough Commander Mark Rist said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the gentleman who died.
“Sadly, at this time of year our accidental house fires tend to rise.
“If you would like us to visit you, check your property and offer assistance, please call us on 08001 777069.
“We are particularly targeting our resources at those who may be most vulnerable should a fire start in your home, such as elderly members of our community living alone.”
