Brighton robber sentenced

A Brighton man robbed four convenience stores in three days.

Chris Moodey, 33, of Harrington Road, Brighton, was jailed for three years and seven months on Monday (28 November) after he admitted the robberies at Lewes Crown Court.

He also pleaded guilty to two charges of having an offensive weapon over the same three-day period in July.

In addition he admitted a charge of fraud on Friday 11 March.

Rachel Suarez, 29, from Egremont Place, Brighton, pleaded guilty to robbery at the Corner News and Booze shop in Brighton on Saturday 2 July.

She was sentenced to six months in jail suspended for two years and ordered to pay £120 in compensation after appearing at Lewes Crown Court on Friday 4 November.

Moodey and Suarez pleaded guilty at an early hearing at Lewes Crown Court on Friday 28 October.

The court was told that Moodey had robbed four local stores in Brighton including Corner News and Booze and N&M armed with a knife on two occasions from 2 July to 4 July. He was accompanied by Suarez on the first robbery at Corner News and Booze.

Detective Constable Steve Amner said: “This was a nasty series of robberies that caused alarm and distress to the victims and Moodey has quite rightfully received a jail sentence.”

Moodey robbed the following

  • Corner News & Booze in Upper Hollingdean Road on Saturday 2 July
  • the post office store in Preston Drove on Sunday 3 July
  • N&M Stores in Upper Lewes Road on Monday 4 July
  • St Mary’s convenience store in Upper Hamilton Road on Monday 4 July.

Sussex Police said that no one was injured in the incidents.
