Zappa Plays Zappa
Dweezil Zappa’s old man, Frank, must be a hard act to follow, particularly when you have a large projector screen showing some of his iconic performances and are having a stab at the entirety of his most successful album; ‘Apostrophe’. Still, Zappa Jr and his impressive band of extremely skilled musicians effectively captured the essence of a career spanning more than 80 albums and seemingly every musical genre. Highlights ranged from the heavy-riffing ‘Muffin Man’, to the sprawling, stop-start weirdness of ‘Don’t You Ever Wash That Thing?’ to a surprisingly rapturous reception. Nepotism is usually infuriating; here it created a satisfying replica of a truly original rock star.
