Full list of candidates for Hove by-election published

Nominations have closed for the Brighton and Hove City Council by-election in Westbourne ward.

Seven candidates will contest the seat.

It became vacant when former Conservative council leader Brian Oxley stepped down to move to Derby to be near his elderly widowed father.

Former Hove police commander Graham Cox will defend the seat for the Tories.

His opponents include sustainable events consultant Louisa Greenbaum, who is standing for the Greens and who came within 250 votes of winning a seat in the ward in May.

His other main rival is Nigel Jenner for Labour. He previously worked as youth services manager for the council.

Four other candidates are in the contest

  • Gareth Jones (Liberal Democrat)
  • Paul Perrin (UK Independence Party)
  • Pip Tindall (Trade Unionists and Socialists Against Cuts)
  • Susan Collard (European Citizens Party)

Mrs Greenbaum came fourth in the ward in the local elections in May – the pair coming first and second became councillors – and Dr Collard finished last with just 39 votes.

They are the only two candidates who live in the ward although Mr Cox used to live there before moving to neighbouring Central Hove.

Mr Jenner lives in Goldsmid, the ward that he contested in May.

The other three candidates live in Brighton. Pip Tindall stood for the Greens in East Brighton in May.

The by-election will take place on Thursday 22 December and the count will take place at Brighton Town Hall.
