Brighton woman tries to fight off bag snatcher

A woman put up a brave struggle when a man snatched a bag from her in Brighton.

Sussex Police have issued an efit of the thief.

He struck at about 7.30pm on Wednesday 30 November as the 25-year old local woman was walking to a friend’s home in Sussex Square in Kemp Town.

When she reached the porch she took her mobile phone from her bag before realising someone was standing behind her.

The man was described as white, aged about 40, 6ft tall and of very slim build. He had a gaunt looking face and light blue eyes.

He wore a black or dark beanie hat which was plain and woolen. On his hands he wore woollen gloves. He was wearing a dark blue puffa jacket which was to the waist.

Around his face he had a black plain scarf which was tucked into his jacket.

None of the clothing had any logos or anything distinctive on it.

He demanded her bag and pushed her backwards.

Although she bravely resisted, she let go of her handbag. She was unhurt.

The man then made off towards the seafront.

Police searched the area but the suspect was not found and the bag has not been recovered.

Detective Constable Robin Aspin said: “This was a very shocking and unprovoked attack and we ask anyone who thinks they may know who the man is to call us immediately.

“The offender has very piercing blue eyes and very gaunt cheeks.

“The victim acted in self-defence and was extremely brave in fighting off the attacker.

“It is an isolated incident and we have no other recent reports of such offences in the area but as the nights drawn in we naturally reiterate our common sense advice on personal safety.”
