Pupils pampered on fact-finding trip to Brighton and Hove college

A group of pupils came to Brighton to learn about further education courses and found themselves being given a pampering.

Pupils from Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee School visited City College Brighton and Hove for a flavour of the courses on offer.

When they reached the Hair and Beauty Department they were given free treatments by the students there.

QEII caters for children and young people from 2 to 19 years old with severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties.

The school’s deputy head Carol Willard said: “The QEII pupils absolutely loved coming to City College.

“As well as experiencing a really friendly and vibrant atmosphere, it gave them a valuable insight into the type of skills they could learn at a further education college while the free hair and beauty treatments they received were a big bonus too.”

The visiting youngsters also took a tour round the carpentry and visual arts departments.

They came as part of their school’s transition programme which helps pupils to identify their future educational and career opportunities.

Frances Franklin, City College’s curriculum manager for care, foundation learning and service industries, said: “We really welcomed this opportunity to work with the pupils and staff from QEII.

“It’s an essential part of training in the hair and beauty industry to be able to adapt techniques and communication skills to meet customers’ needs and our students found the whole experience a really positive one.

“They gained so much from the event, particularly in terms of customer service.

“We’ve now offered to make a subsequent visit to Horsham next year to continue our working partnership with the school.”
