Film: Shame (18)

Director: Steve McQueen

Already the winner of nine awards and nominated for a further 16, Shame, from British filmmaker Steve McQueen, is certainly making a splash in cinematic circles.

Michael Fassbender plays Brandon, a New York loner who, although avoiding intimacy with women, cannot control his sexual desires and is compulsively addicted to sex with women. With an already haphazard lifestyle to contend with, things start to spiral rapidly out of control when his younger sister Cissy, played by Carey Mulligan, unceremoniously comes to stay with him.

Churning up problems from the past and never dealing with issues of the present, it’s hardly surprising the result is a film generating so much international attention when in the hands of such a respected writer and director.

Released Friday 13 January
Showing at Odeon and Cineworld
