Three men face court over £2m theft from Sussex University

Three men face court today charged with conspiring to steal more than £2 million from Sussex University.

Gurdip Singh, 36, Hamel Bakriana, 35, of Campbell Avenue, Thurmaston, Leicester, and Imtiaz Valli, 33, of Caledonian Road, Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, are due to appear on bail at Leicester Magistrates’ Court.

They are accused of conspiring to steal £2,036,616 from the university in October 2010.

It is alleged that they unlawfully diverted money that was being paid by the university, in part payment for building new student accommodation, to a completely unrelated account.

The court appearances today (Tuesday 10 January) follow an investigation by the Major Fraud Unit of Sussex Police working in co-operation with the East Midlands Regional Asset Recovery Team.
