Detctives investigating Brighton death release CCTV footage and bail a man

A 40-year-old man from Brighton and Hove has been bailed by detectives investigating the death of a man who was attacked in his home.

Sussex Police said that the man was arrested early on Thursday (12 January). He was interviewed before being released yesterday (Friday 13 January).

Detectives bailed the man until Wednesday 29 February as they continue to look into the circumstances that led to the death of Christopher “Mac” McLean.

Mr McLean, 65, of Caledonian Court in Caledonian Road, Brighton, died on Friday 6 January.

Two men are suspected of attacking him in his home about two hours before he collapsed and died.

Officers have released CCTV footage of three women and a man who they say may be able to help their inquiries.

Detectives believe that the group spoke to the two suspects at about 8pm on Friday 6 January, moments before Mr McLean was attacked.

Detective Chief Inspector Nick May, of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, is heading the investigation. He said: “We are keen to find out who these women and the man are and if they know the two men who approached them.

“CCTV shows them talking to the two men we are linking to the assault on Mr McLean.

“They may have valuable information that may help us in the inquiry and should be assured that we do not believe they are linked in any way to the assault on Mr McLean that happened about 10 minutes later at his home in Caledonian Court.

“I would urge them or anyone who recognises them to come forward.”

He also urged anyone who saw two men in the area before or after the incident to come forward.

Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact detectives on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
