Brighton playwright shortlisted for best radio drama award

A Brighton writer’s play is up for the Best Drama award at the first BBC Audio Drama Awards.

The radio version of The First Domino was adapted from a play by Jonathan Cash, written after he was injured in the bombing of a gay pub, The Admiral Duncan, in Soho 13 years ago. Three people died in the nail bomb blast.

Cash received compensation for his injuries and used it to fund a Master of Arts course in dramatic writing at Sussex University.

He was encouraged during his course by award-winning director Faynia Williams.

Cash’s play was first staged – and picked up an award – at the Brighton Festival Fringe in 2009.

It was produced by Brighton Theatre and directed by Williams at the Latest Music Bar in Manchester Street, Brighton.

Former Doctor Who actor David Tennant will present the radio drama awards next Sunday (29 January) at BBC Broadcasting House in London.
