It’s all in the mind
Zara Baker speaks to Jonathan Conway of The Conway Practice to find out how NLP therapy can bring about positive change
Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a relatively new therapy that has been growing since the 1970s. Jonathan Conway qualified as a hypnotherapist in the year 2000.
A Masters and NLP Coaching Course followed, establishing him as a practitioner who helps a number of people overcome anxieties and phobias. With health problems linked to smoking and weight, and with the recession adding stress and strain to our everyday lives, Jonathan Conway explains how NLP can help now more than ever.
What age group can benefit from NLP/hypnotherapy?
“There is not really an age limit as it can be helpful for children to the very elderly.”
Can NLP therapy be chosen over medication?
“NLP and hypnotherapy can be particularly helpful for helping people make behavioural changes – smoking cessation, weight control…It can also be helpful to assist people to increase their performance in sales and working in teams. It is not a case of being chosen instead of medication but a different approach to resolving emotional and behavioural problems.”
What can NLP help with?
“Smoking cessation, weight control, phobias, stress management, building self esteem and confidence, controlling anxiety, public speaking and learning to relax through self-hypnosis”
Please talk us through a session…
“Sessions are usually a hour in length. At the first appointment I would usually ask the client some background about their overall situation and agree an outcome as to what the client is hoping to achieve. It is important that this is realistic and achieveable. I would also encourage the client to do something for him/herself that they enjoy. This ‘me time’ could include going for a walk or listening to music. Keeping some kind of journal of achievements can be helpful as this helps to build self-esteem and confidence.”
How many sessions are usually required?
“The average number of sessions is usually around six but it can be less or more.”
How successful is NLP? Do clients fall back into old habits years down the line?
“NLP Coaching is a very popular and effective way of helping people; some clients will need a top up from time to time.”
Where are you based?
“I currently work in Brighton and Hove, Horam, Forest Row, North London, and Harley Street in central London.”
Are telephone sessions available?
“Yes, they are. This would be similar to a face to face meeting but by phone, thus saving the client time in travelling to my practice.”
Tell us about the newly launched website www.theconwaypractice.co.uk…
“The main reason for launching the new website was to make sure that it can be regularly updated and that I can include a blog. The first website was built when screens were narrower and technology has moved on since then.”
What do you want most people to take away with them following NLP/hypnotherapy?
“I want people to feel better about themselves and learn to be as kind to themselves as they can be to other people. Seeing what their true potential really is and what the next steps truly are.”
What would you tell someone who is considering NLP and hypnotherapy?
“There has never been a better time to take stock of where we are going in our lives. As life gets more difficult it is good to learn to be the very best that we can be.”
