Sister Act
Despite the irritating schoolgirls surrounding me for the first half, I came away loving this rollicking show. How can you not have fun when the stage is full of nuns in sequined habits getting down and dirty with a score that cleverly apes the Philly sound? With hysterical funk and disco grooves and moves, a fun-filled plot and a terrific set, Sister Act is a musical romp made in heaven. Denise Black as mother superior is exactly that, superior, pious and often pompous, but at the denouement shows that she too has a heart of gold and a voice to belt it out with the best of them. In fact she has some of the best songs of the evening. Newcomer Cynthia Erivo as Deloris is a blow you away sensation; moving, funny, sexy and with a voice that will be echoing around theatres for years and years to come.
