Brighton and Hove councillors asked to help trans community

A Green councillor has asked his colleagues to help make Brighton and Hove safer for transgender and transsexual people.

Councillor Phelim Mac Cafferty said that the murder of Andrea Waddell in 2009 highlighted the discrimination and safety issues facing the trans community.

He said that physical and mental health and housing were other issues where the Brighton and Hove City Council could make a difference.

He said that the council was a big employer and could give a lead to other people and organisations.

The council’s Overview and Scrutiny Commission agreed to consider a report at its next meeting to help members decide whether to set up a dedicated scrutiny panel to explore the issues further.

The next meeting is due to be held at Hove Town Hall on Tuesday 27 March.
