A Gala Concert for Valentine’s Day – Sussex Symphony Orchestra
Love in a cold climate, more like! The temperature sank well below zero throughout the evening in an already cold church (yet again). What determined musicians!
Mark Andrew James set the tone with his endearing introductions and well judged conducting. Soloist Simon Ballard (piano) delivered the most beautiful moments of the evening although playing just the slow movements of four concertos is curious programming. Praise too for the other soloists, especially Nicola Bates (violin) and the uncredited flute, trumpet and horns. The whole orchestra became plucky soloists in Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, a highlight of the evening.
