Seven thousand people run in Brighton Half Marathon

The organisers of the Brighton Half Marathon said that a record number of runners took part this year.

The race took place under blue skies today (Sunday 19 February) with 7,427 runners setting off and finishing in Madeira Drive.

The event is the main fundraiser for the Sussex Beacon, a Brighton charity for people with HIV and Aids.

Fiona Powell, from Brighton and Hove City Athletics Club, was the first woman home, achieving a hat-trick – her third consecutive title in the race. She crossed the finish line in 1 hour 21 minutes 40 seconds.

David Wardle, who won the men’s race for the past two years, was not present to defend his title.

So Ian Leitch, from the Brighton-based Phoenix Athletics Club, went into the race as a favourite to win.

But Matthew Dumigan, from the Swansea Harriers, crossed the line first in 01:10:22. Ian Leitch came second in 01:10:37.

The Youth Races also had a record number of 353 young runners covering a mile on Madeira Drive, all wearing the official Youth Race t-shirts.

Kat Williams, chief executive of the Sussex Beacon, said: “What an amazing day with a great atmosphere and brilliant sunshine shining down on all our runners.

“This is a record year for the number of runners taking part and we are very proud of everyone who was involved with the race.”

It is the 22nd year that the race has been held and it is expected to raise at least £50,000.
