Brighton Science Festival – Catalyst Club Goes Cuddly
Tonight’s extra edition of the Catalyst Club discussion group began with Rebecca Powell-Tuck’s history of the Bird’s Custard empire. Her light-hearted lecture concluded with this evening’s host Richard Robinson vibrating instant custard with soundwaves, to bizarre effect. Ewan Kirkland gave a broad introduction to the cultural study of videogames, which certainly connected with many of the audience’s interests. Lastly, engaging former ‘Really Wild Show’ presenter Howie Watkins wrapped up with some wide ranging reflections on animal senses, including the gob-smacking but convincingly argued suggestion that dogs’ heightened sense of smell enables them to perceive the world through the fourth dimension.
