Young people given the chance to spend £19k in East Brighton
Youngsters in one of the most deprived parts of Brighton are being offered a £19,000 pot of money for youth projects.
The proposed projects or events must be for the benefit of 13 to 19-year-olds living in the Moulsecoomb and Bevendean neighbourhoods
And potential bidders have until midday on Monday 5 March to send in their ideas.
The grants will be paid out by the Big Dish Out fund which is run by the Trust for Developing Communities.
The trust is offering grants of up to £750 for small local groups and a larger pot for amounts up to £3,000.
Applicants will have a chance to pitch their project ideas to residents and other local young people who will vote for their favourite at an event on Saturday 31 March.
The trust said that almost a dozen young people from the local area have decided the selection criteria and the bidding process.
Open meetings are being held every Monday from 5pm to 7pm at the Moulsecoomb Leisure Centre leading up to the voting event.
Councillor Sue Shanks, Brighton and Hove City Council cabinet member for children and young people, said: “Young residents face a whole range of challenges these days so it’s great that we can help start projects designed by young people for young people.
“This is a truly grassroots project that provides young people in Moulsecoomb and Bevendean with significant funds that could help kick start projects to make a real difference.
“I hope that as many people as possible get involved in both the bidding and voting.”
