Fire crews tackle blaze in kitchen of empty Brighton flat

Firefighters forced their way into a Brighton flat to tackle a kitchen fire.

Crews from Preston Circus in Brighton and from Roedean dealt with the fire in a flat in Turton Close on the Bristol Estate just after 6pm on Monday evening (27 February).

Neighbours dialled 999 after they heard a smoke alarm and smelled burning.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said that firefighters had to force their way into the flat which was unoccupied at the time

They spent an hour dealing with the blaze and its aftermath.

The fire service said: “More than half of accidental fires at home are started by cooking. Many kitchen fires happen when people are not paying attention or they leave things unattended.”
