The Jezabels

Described as one of Australia’s leading EMO bands, they may have all been clad in black but the first few songs were pure power pop; with pounding drums, shimmering cymbals and stabbing synth chords driving the operatics of vocalist Hayley Mary. Later in the set the sound jumped between stadium rock to moody power ballads and several 80s keyboard-led numbers could have been lifted from an alternative ‘The Breakfast Club’ soundtrack. With minimal banter, apart from stating they were not playing requests, the songs became a little repetitive and dated but they were well constructed and performed with conviction.
