Get smooth for summer with laser hair removal

Sick of shaving? Weary of waxing? You’re not alone. With the weather warming up, we want to be able to shed those layers and step out in shorts, cropped trousers and skirts, or swimwear on the beach. But milk bottle legs aren’t our biggest concern (we have self-tanning lotions for that!). Unwanted hair can be a small niggle or a huge worry, but it can be effectively treated with laser hair removal. Now is the perfect time of year for Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment, as it isn’t suitable when you have a sun tan.

“Skin is left smooth with hair regrowth to a minimum – or none at all!”

“It’s ideal because we can start courses of treatment before your holiday and then you’ll be ready for wearing shorts and summer clothes, and of course showing off your lovely gleaming body on the beach, cruise ship or poolside,” explains A New You in Brighton, who use the Gentlelase system. “If you’re going on holiday during the course, you’ll need to wait approximately four weeks for your suntan to fade before we undertake a further treatment.”

Who’s it for?

For women it may be the bikini line, legs, underarms or face; for men (yes, laser hair removal is extremely popular with men too!) it can be great for the back, chest and neck. Forget about shaving rashes and stubble a few days later – IPL effectively treats the area, leaving skin smooth and hair regrowth to a minimum or none at all!

It’s not for everyone though, as Xenia from Beauty Works in Portslade (who use the Ecolite IPL system) explains: “If you’re blonde, laser hair removal doesn’t work well – the paler your skin and darker the hair the better. The laser light is drawn to pigment in the hair which then denatures it.”

The hair can then grow back but with continued treatment, very little or no hair grows in the end. A lifetime of smooth results with unwanted hair removed – permanently. But how often would you need to go? “On average six, in some cases eight treatments are needed,” says Shadi of the Shadi Danin Medi-Spa who use the Saprino XL system. “This is if it’s not hormonal or a genetic problem.” Treatment on hormonal hair growth – the upper lip – will reduce hair growth but results are not permanent.

Safety first
On your first visit, a thorough consultation will be made. A patch test on a small area of skin will find you the correct setting of the laser and how your skin responds. This is essential before treating a larger area of skin. As mentioned, results cannot be guaranteed. Depending on the hair and the number of treatments, regrowth will be lighter and finer or non-existent.
