Brighton and Hove college spells out options for under 19s

A year’s free education in Brighton and Hove is on offer for anyone under 19 at the end of August.

Phil Frier, principal of City College Brighton and Hove, said: “There are going to be many cases where a student may feel that they’ve had their full entitlement to free education once they’ve passed their 18th birthday or have completed their A levels but that isn’t really the case.

“It simply comes down to their age on the 31 August. If they’re still 18 on that day, they are entitled to another free year’s education on a full-time course.

“At City College, this can mean all kinds of opportunities to do either a vocational course to help gain the skills to go straight into employment or an A level equivalent Level 3 course which can help a student on their way to a university place.

“We’d also encourage students who are completing AS level studies this summer to look at the options we can offer them.”

The awareness campaign was being run, Mr Frier said, because young people’s entitlement to free full-time education at the college was often overlooked.

The campus in Pelham Street in the North Laine and Wilson Avenue in Whitehawk had fantastic facilities, he said.

They included training restaurants, digital media suites, a travel bureau, workshops, art studios and a new state-of-the-art workshop for trainee mechanics.

He said that students could earn qualifications in the kind of setting that would allow them to gain the experience valued by employers.

He added that City College also had excellent links with local employer in sectors such as construction, sports, arts, media, business and catering.

The courses on offer range from entry level to postgraduate specialist courses, with industry certificates and training and diplomas in between.

Mr Frier said: “No matter what level students are at with their current skills and qualifications, the college can meet most educational needs.”
