Pelican + Blackstorm + Sea Bastard

2012’s shaping up to be a great year for Brighton metal gigs, with a storming set by Kylesa at this same venue in February, shows from Meshuggah, The Dillinger Escape Plan and Sunn O))) in the next few months and this performance from Chicago post-metallers Pelican. Providing sterling support were silly-named Brighton doom-bringers Sea Bastard (it’s just not possible to dislike a band with songs like ‘Psychic Funeral’) alongside the pounding sludge-meets-hardcore of Earthtone 9 vocalist Karl’s newer project, Blackstorm. Still, the night was inevitably the Americans’ as their quality instrumental rock churned away majestically before an almost unbelievably heavy knockout blow finished things brilliantly.
