Brighton road reopened after flooding
Southern Water said that work to repair a burst water main in the heart of Brighton was complete.
The incident flooded Preston Street yesterday evening (Sunday 15 April). Sussex Police closed the road while two crews from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service – one from Hove and the other from Preston Circus – were called out.
The street is known for its restaurants and takeaways and six premises were affected although the road in general was relatively quiet last night.
A Southern Water spokesman said: “We apologise to customers affected by this water main burst.
“We were made aware of the incident at about 8.30pm and shut off the main to stem the leak and repair it.
“A team worked through the night and the repair was completed this morning.
“Six properties were affected and our customer services team has been out to see those people and organise a clean-up operation.
“We are working with customers individually to help put things back to normal.
“Water main bursts like this are most commonly caused by ground movement, especially in dry weather.
“Again we apologise for the inconvenience caused.”
