Matt Whistler gets on his scooter

Ok, I fess up: the push scooter days are coming round full circle. First there was the Veriflex Scooter sponsored by Skate distributor: Shiner Ltd in Bristol, was one of the few push scooters available on the market at the time of the World Record attempt from John O’Groats to Lands End. The design is a BMX-style push scooter with 360° rotating handle bars.

Then there was Sidewalker to smash a 24 hour World Record and travel 161 miles in 24 hours at Aintree on the same concrete race track where Stirling Moss won the Grand Prix in 1957.

I also used the Sidewalker to follow the Tour De France in 1998 as they travelled along the East Coast of Ireland from Dublin to Cork. Then there was the Millenium scooter that drew the crowds at the Edinburgh Fringe where I dressed up as Prime Evel Knievel and jumped over matchbox size trucks.

I have also used this push scooter in episode three of underwater sitcom, Radio West Pier, as my character Jah Scooterman.

Somewhere inbetween all of that there was the Zooter with thick pneumatic tyres and the rickety rackety bone shaker London Commuter and family day out Microskate scooter. Now it’s Segways all the way – Inaspin.com – the original South Downs Zorb guys have gone all two wheeled in robotic style. It’s a lazy, crazy ride and not quite a push scooter but more of a sci -fi seafront extravaganza. I’m sold.
