Our Country’s Good
The award-winning play, Our Country’s Good, is a story by playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker, in which a handful of newly deported petty English criminals are brought to New South Wales during the 1780s. In an attempt to humanise them, a theatre-loving soldier defies his brutish superior officer by staging a production of Farquhar’s ‘The Recruitment Officer’.
The show featured simple stage settings that complimented this interesting area of Australian history. It appeared a little slow in places and the ending was slightly abrupt, although merit should be awarded since there were 22 roles played by just ten talented actors.
