Brighton murder suspect remains in custody as police name victim

A man was still being held this afternoon (Tuesday 1 May) on suspicion of murdering a Brighton man named by police as Jeffrey Burrows.

Mr Burrows – known to friends as Jeff or Humphrey or Big Humph – died after being stabbed at his flat in Norfolk Square on Sunday evening (29 April).

The 40-year-old widow, who grew up in Dungannon in Northern Ireland, lived alone at the flat.

He has not been formally identified yet but members of his family are expected to arrive in Sussex as soon as they can.

Paramedics from South East Coast Ambulance Service

tried for more than an hour to save Mr Burrows but he was pronounced dead in Norfolk Square shortly after 9pm on Sunday.

Post-mortem tests yesterday (Monday 30 April) concluded that Mr Burrows died from stab wounds.

A knife recovered at the flat is being examined to see whether it was the weapon used to kill him, Sussex Police said.

A 21-year-old Brighton man was arrested at 9am yesterday and remained in custody while detectives interviewed him and carried out further inquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Nick Sloan, of the Surrey and Sussex Major Crime Team, said: “We do not believe that this was a random attack and we are still keen to hear from anyone who was in the Norfolk Square area early yesterday evening and who saw any suspicious activity.”
