Sir Basil Spence and the University of Sussex

To commemorate the University of Sussex’s 50th anniversary, an exhibition celebrated Sir Basil Spence’s red brick architecture that comprises the surrounding campuses. Exhibiting scarcely seen sketches, documents and the silver key to the library, Spence’s vision from design to construction was laid bare for the public. The most absorbing elements detailed ideas that never came to be, like an aesthetic moat that was intended to encircle the entire edifice. The fascinating collection justifies his perfection, functional innovation and overall motif that’s preserved to this day; grade one listed of course. An inspiring, alluring and complex exposition.
