Hedda Gabla

Moving in society, bored with being adored, a school bully who never grew out of it – Ibsen’s Hedda is a woman pulling the wings off of flies simply to hear what noises they might make. Annabelle Sacher’s title turn sometimes moves from vaguely disinterested into actual dislocation – making it difficult to believe in this Hedda. But her haughty demeanour and piercing eyes are mostly compulsive. Noticeably, Joshua Crisp as her husband is lively, reactive and utterly engaging, convincing as too good a heart to recognise Hedda’s black one. A solid production of a classic with a few staging teething problems on opening night, no doubt straightened out quickly.

I’ve just tuned into this Latest Review pages. As a person with an interest in the Old Court Room, just like to say the tech. difficulties on Hedda Gabler were caused by the callous moving of lights etc by the Great Escape people who used the Old Court Room earlier in the day, leaving no time to put things right before Hedda, and making the next show start late. Actors, directors and companies reading this – please thnk of the people who have to follow you in to a venue. HeddaGabler cast – students – did well to not be thrown by the carefully set and rehearsed light cues not working. Thanks for giving me room to explain.
