The Great Escape – Boy Friend + The Darcys
Hidden in a converted church hall behind West Street, The Warren seems to hold secret treasures; with a new band line-up, this night’s punters, though, had to wait for anything that special. First up, Toronto rockers The Darcys came across as rock’s Incredible Hulk. Mostly, they were the weedy Bruce Banner, dull and feeble, only occasionally unleashing their guitar beast before reverting to the puny, MOR Banner. Austin, Texas duo Boy Friend had no problem with volume: their deliberately wonky My Bloody Valentine/ Cocteau Twins schtick was arresting, though lacked the sheer density necessary to build such a wall of sound in a larger venue such as this.
