Great Escape – Slow Down, Molasses
There seems to be more Canadian acts playing than British at this year’s jamboree of new music from around the globe. This lot, from the prairies of Saskachewan took to the stage at the slightly ungodly hour of midday, but with near enough a full house, there was obviously a good deal of anticipation about them. With hints and influences from the likes of Teenage Fanclub, fellow Canadians Broken Social Scene, and My Bloody Valentine, their melodic, spacious and textured alt-rock is compact and not-too-fussy; sometimes euphoric, always riveting. Basically a collective of musicians that revolves around Tyson McShane, the six piece that took to the stage today employed the usual armoury of guitars and drums but with added keys, effects and percussion, the overall impression being one of a band who are more than the sum of their parts.
