The Great Escape – Anna-Anna
I was hoping this Brazilian gig would be a welcome break from the indie bands and club kids but the less-than-dynamic solo artist got off to a bad start with two leaden openers. Controlling the backing track desk herself distracted her from the performance and the lo-fi, dubby music cut off mid-song causing an embarrassing pause. Possessed of a soft, breathy voice, she was often off-key and the entire set felt like a nervy school project gone wrong. On paper it could have worked but proved to be a great disappointment, echoed by an absent audience by the end.

I completely disagree with this review. Despite a few technical difficulties, which to be honest a lot of bands had at the festival, from Bass Drum of Death and their non working microphones to Scum who’s voice was inaudible throughout the gig, to Princess Chelsea. All these bands’ performances were great, however the sound was often rubbish and you could see the bands getting annoyed with it.
Anna-Anna’s case was a similar one, she had some technical problems but over all the sound was better than let’s say Scum (who’s gig I enjoyed despite all the problems!).
I thought Anna-Anna was among the most interesting performances I saw all weekend, it’s just a shame there wasn’t more people at the gig, but what do you expect on a friday at 3pm for an experimental music gig???
