The Great Escape – Oso Leone
This Majorcan band, part of the excellently eclectic Catalan Sounds programme, started late but thankfully well with swirling organ and chirpy guitars combining with 60’s harmonies. The echo-ey vocals brought to mind Fleet Foxes but the songs were more drum led. One song, with Hooky bass lines and choppy guitar, was like a Spanish Joy Division and well received. The longest song (by far) was thankfully their best with the drums turning up the Balearic beat as the guitars took off without obscuring the vocals. The set ended with ‘The River’; a modish number with a trippy Madchester feel.
