The Great Escape – Lulu James
The stunningly beautiful, self-proclaimed 21st Century soul singer, backed by live piano and bass plus recorded beats and backing vocals, produced one of the weekend’s surprises with her set of nocturnal club sounds. Possessed of a strong British soul voice, the dubsteppy arrangements gave the songs a modern, yet classic, feel – imagine James Blake producing Labelle. Her down-to-earth banter was endearing and a bravura acapella number proved her pipes were in fine working order. She went all out on the funky set closer ‘Inna Box’ and, judging by this assured performance, she is destined for great success.
