Brighton MP elected to key party committee

The Brighton Kemptown MP Simon Kirby has been elected to the executive of the influential 1922 Committee by his fellow Conservatives in the House of Commons.

The committee has traditionally provided a way for backbench Tory MPs to raise issues of importance with the Prime Minister and his cabinet colleagues.

Mr Kirby said: “I am delighted to have been elected to the 1922 Committee.

“This position will allow me to be an even louder voice in Parliament for the residents of Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven.

“Since being elected I have never shied from raising important local issues with the Prime Minister and have achieved a number of notable successes, such as securing funding for ultrafast broadband for smaller cities like Brighton, ringfencing the Aids support grant and pressuring the city council to reverse their council tax hike.

“Residents can be assured I will continue to speak honestly and frankly with the Prime Minister.

“Standing up for local people and the issues that affect them is my top priority.”
