The Charles Dickens Literary Cabaret

Performance group Scary Little Girls hosted an evening of literary nudges and Dickensian winks in Hendrick’s decadent steampunkesque marquee. Led by the suitably named Monica DePlume, busting out of her bright bustier, her bullying of her ‘minions’ was overturned without too much trouble thanks to the subversive mischief bubbling under from Nom DePlume on props, providing some delightful physical comedy, and Mr Hardwhistle – a very slender lady acknowledging her disguise as a cockney lad – on musical asides. An education in parts but mostly the trio simply bounced off each other with great delight, spearing Monica’s pomposity, indulging her fun flirtatiousness, and concluding in a heartfelt audience singalong from Lionel Bart’s Oliver!.
