A Celebration of William Byrd, The Cardinall’s Musick

Andrew Carwood is a very blessed man to be conducting such fine singers who respond so delicately to his slightest gesture. This was choral singing of the highest order. With solo voices for most of the concert and never more than two on any part, the texture was always clear and well balanced.

The programme was a satisfying selection of the meditative, plaintive and reassuring. Carwood knows how to work St Bartholomew’s majestic acoustic to his advantage. His tempos were almost brisk, which held my attention and stopped me from dreaming. I just wish it had gone on forever!
